Getting Started with UML Diagrams in Under 5 Minutes
The UML Diagram is very similar to the Flowchart Diagram. Many of the same tools are used, and automation is built into the template. Watch this short video tutorial on Flowcharts to learn how to create your UML Diagram in SmartDraw.
Detailed Directions: How to Make a UML Diagram
The Basics
Select UML Diagram from the Software Design category.
In a UML Diagram, you will not have a "Start" shape in the default Work Area as you do in a Flowchart. Rather, you are presented with a blank Work Area to create your diagram as desired. We recommend starting by dragging and dropping a symbol from the library in the SmartPanel or Symbols tab to your Work Area.
To continue building your diagram with automated formatting, first select a shape from the library, then use the Add Left, Add Right, Add Up or Add Down arrows to place your shape into the visual. Repeat this step using the shapes needed for your diagram.
Find additional symbols by selecting More Symbols from the More drop down menu. Browse or search by keyword through the available symbol libraries.
Add a split path by selecting a shape from your Work Area, then choosing one of the Split Path options from the Split Path section of the SmartPanel.
Add text to a split path line by double-clicking on the line, which engages the text tool. When finished typing, click elsewhere in your Work Area to save typed text.
Join a split path by selecting one shape from a split path, then clicking Join Paths in the Split Path section of the SmartPanel.
To add lines in your visual, first select your desired line shape from the Line Shape drop down menu in the Lines section of the SmartPanel. Next, click Draw Lines and use your cursor to click and drag in the Work Area.
Add free-floating text by choosing Add Text from the Text section of the SmartPanel, which engages the text tool. Click into your Work Area to type, and when finished, click elsewhere in your Work Area to save typed text.
