There are three types of hyperlinks that may be inserted into a SmartDraw file. They are:
- A hyperlink to another page within a multi-page SmartDraw file
- A hyperlink to a separate SmartDraw File
- A hyperlink to a website
Hyperlinking to another page within a multi-page SmartDraw File
We strongly recommend using this method when creating hyperlinks in SmartDraw. Following this method makes the sharing of files easier and saves time overall.
Begin by creating a multi-page SmartDraw file.
Save this file by choosing Save As from the File tab.
Select SmartDraw from the Save To drop down menu, and Name your file. Click Save.
To add a hyperlink to a shape in page one (1) that will navigate to page two (2), first select your desired shape from page one's Work Area. In this example, I will select the 'Research Market' shape.
Select Hyperlink from the Insert tab.
Because you are linking to a page in your current file, you can ignore the top section of the Add Hyperlink dialog window. Choose your desired page from the drop down menu in the Page in Current File section of the Add Hyperlink dialog box. Click OK.
A hyperlink icon will appear in your selected shape, and when selected it will take you to the linked page within your file.
Hyperlinking to a separate SmartDraw File
Begin by creating a single or multi-page SmartDraw File.
Save this file by choosing Save As from the File tab.
Select SmartDraw from the Save To drop down menu, and Name your file. Click Save.
To add a hyperlink to a shape in page one (1) that will navigate to a separate SmartDraw file, first select your desired shape from page one's Work Area. In this example, I will select the 'Define User Personas' shape.
Select Hyperlink from the Insert tab.
This time, you can ignore the bottom section of the Add Hyperlink dialog window, and if you had created just a single-page file, the bottom section would not even appear. Select Browse from the File or Website section of the Add Hyperlink dialog window.
Expand your Select a document window to see all available SmartDraw files.
Use the scroll bar in the My Files section to scroll through and then select your desired file. Click Select.
Choose OK from the Add Hyperlink dialog window, which now lists the file that will become hyperlinked.
A hyperlink icon will appear in your selected shape, and when selected it will open the hyperlinked file in a new internet browser tab or window.
Hyperlinking to a Website
Using the same instructions as above, create and save your single or multi-page file in SmartDraw.
Now, select a shape in your Work Area that you would like to contain a hyperlink to a website. For this example, I will select the 'Create Content for Personas' shape.
Select Hyperlink from the Insert tab.
Type the website URL into the available field. Click OK.
A hyperlink icon will appear in your selected shape, and when selected it will open the website URL in a new internet browser tab or window.
You can also add a URL hyperlink to any text that you place into a visual. To do this, highlight the text in your Work Area then click Hyperlink. The finished result will look something like this:
